In the Heart of Chaos

VR film by Richard Copans

“THERE IS NO ART WHICH MUST, MORE THAN THE THEATRE, BRING TOGETHER ILLUSION AND REALITY”  JEAN VILAR

Bringing together illusion and reality. That is what is on offer with virtual reality whose specificities, from both a technical and narrative standpoint, raise many questions and create new challenges.
Histoires d’espaces, season 2, offers 4 shorts in stereoscopic VR produced with shows in mind that were presented at the Avignon and Aix en Provence Festivals in 2017.  These four works offer the opportunity of bringing together directors, playwrights, choreographs, musicians or visual artists to question and explore virtual reality in comparison to live productions.

“With this camera made up of 8 captors, the filmmaker’s usual reference points are eliminated. With the spectator’s new freedom of perspective, only the force of the mise en scene and the bodies of the actors will be showcased. Acting style and text come first,” says Richard Copans.

By voluntarily accentuating the distance between what is close and what is far and by taking advantage of the space available in the apron and front row, he endeavours to reinvent the close-up by filming a chapter of the play by Olivier Py, “Les Parisiens”.
